It's been exactly one month since the last time that I took my measurements, and since I'm blogging daily I thought that it would be the perfect topic.
Lately I've been contemplating giving up on the scale and instead taking weekly pictures of myself and monthly measurements. I figure that what gets me off track whenever I give up the scale isn't that I don't know my weight. It's that I don't have a weekly ritual to look forward to. Why care about what I eat or how much I exercise if there won't be evidence at the end of the week? So maybe if I take a weekly photo of myself, that would be something. But I'm not giving up on the scale just yet, because I think that it is a helpful tool for me at this stage.
I know that the photo would not change drastically from week to week, but over time I have to believe that it will. And wouldn't that make a cool flip book some day, when I've gone from a size 18 to a size 12? I think so.
Anyway, here were my measurements today (the difference between now and September 16th):
neck- 13 (-1)
boobs- 42.5 (0)
under boobs- 37 (-1.5)
wrist- 6 (0)
upper arm- 15 (0)
forearm- 9.5 (0)
tiny waist- 35.5 (-2.5)
belly button- 44 (0)
butt- 52 (0)
thigh, widest- 28 (0)
thigh, smallest- 21 (0)
calf- 16.5 (0)
ankle- 10 (0)
So in the past two months I've lost 5 inches from all over my body. This would be cause for celebration, but... I took my measurements a month ago (and have since lost them!) and the number was 5 inches lost then, too. So I haven't really lost any inches since October 16th, which stinks.
But hey, I kept those 5 inches off for a month, which is great! Still, I'm going to aim to lose more by the end of this blogging challenge.

Needless to say, I'm thrilled with my progress from this challenge! :-)
Unfortunately, I'm feeling sick, like I'm coming down with a cold, so I'm not going to pushing myself quite so hard this week. This may end up not being a big losing week for me, but since I lost 2.8 last week, I'm not too worried about it. I'm going to be gentle with myself while I recover from this cold, which for me may mean less exercise than usual.
I hope that all of your weeks are going well, and I will be trying to do a Tasty Tuesday this week, but I doubt there will be any other posts. It is looking like it will be another super-busy week for me!

Lose 12.6 by Xmas Challenge- Week 3 Results
Here is the latest update for my "lose 12.6 by Xmas" challenge! The results were less dramatic this week, but I expected that and I'm happy with how the challenge is going. As you can see, the second picture is a bit closer up than the first, but I think that you can see a difference in the definition of my waist and hips, which makes me very happy. :-)
Here are the "official" results for the week:
weight- 160.8 (-1.2)
total weight loss for challenge: 5.8
measurements (+/- from last week)
neck: 12 (+/- 0)
upper arm (widest part): 13 (+/- 0)
bust (widest part): 37 (+/- 0)
bust (below breasts): 32.5 (+/- 0)
waist (smallest part): 31 (+/- )
waist (belly button): 35 (-1)
hips (widest part): 44.5 (-0.5)
thighs (widest part): 24.5 (+/- 0)
thighs (halfway b/w knee and crotch): 20 (+/- 0)
calf (widest part): 14.5 (+/- 0)
inches lost from previous week: 1.5
total inches lost for challenge: 15.75
So in three weeks, I have lost 5.8 pounds and 15.75 inches. I'd say that those are amazing results! I'm proud of myself for turning this weight gain around when I did instead of letting it go on even longer.
Coming soon:
- a cookbook review and a recipe from it!!! (hint: it's a simple bean recipe)
- Tasty Tuesday!

total lost since challenge began: 14.5 (WOO-HOO!!!!!)
I can't really see a difference between last week's picture and this week's picture, but I pretty much expected that. It will be a gradual change, but I just know that the final picture that I will share on December 24 on here will be a dramatic difference from the first picture taken on October 15.
In other news, I have completed my first 21 Day No Junk Food Challenge!!!
How did I do? I didn't follow it perfectly, but I did really well. There were a couple of times that I ate some chocolate-flavored graham crackers (chocolate is on the "no" list) and towards the end of the challenge, I allowed natual peanut butter back into my diet (PB is on the "no" list). Oh, and I ate about 5 tortilla chips at a party one night before I remembered that chips were a no-no.
Still, I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment! I have definately learned that I don't need foods like chips and cookies in order to have a delicious day.
I actually didn't get ANY cookies at the store yesterday, despite this week being a week that I am "allowed" junk food. I did get a big bag of small baggies of chips. Half are Stacey's! I also got some crackers, some natural chunky peanut butter, and some vegan ice cream. I don't know whether or not crackers (such as Wasa light and Ritz reduced fat) are actually any healthier than potato or corn chips, but I do know that for whatever reason, I don't binge on them.
One food that I have stopped buying since week 2 of the 21 days challenge and I don't plan to buy again until next year: BREAD. I had been bingeing on bread and I think that is a big part of my recent weight gain. When I have light bread or sandwich thins in the house, I eat them. And I eat them ALL within 24 hours. It's kind of nuts. So, for now, I'm staying away from bread.
Anyway, for now I'm going to continue tracking on My Fitness Pal, since I'm feeling really comfortable over there at the moment, and I love that it tells me every day how much I should weigh in 5 weeks. :-)
I do plan to get back to tracking on Weight Watchers eventually, but right now I'm sticking with MFP. I love that I have the option of tracking either or both places, and will probably be switching from one to the other for a long time.
There are 8 weeks until Christmas, and I have 8 pounds to lose. My awesome math skills tell me that means that I get to lose 1 pound per week, and I am up for the challenge!!!
Do you have any weight loss or fitness goals that you are trying to reach by the end of 2011?

Lose 12.6 by Xmas Week 1 results!
Start weight- 166.6
This week's weight- 164.0 (-2.6)
This week's measurements (+/- from last week)
neck- 12.0 (-1/2 inch)
upper arm (widest part)- 13.5 (-1/2 inch)
bust (widest part)-37.5 (-1/2 inch)
bust (below breasts)-33 (-1 inch)
waist (smallest part)- 31.5 (-.25 inch)
waist (belly button)-36 (-2 inches)
hips (widest part)-45.5 (same)
thighs (widest part)-24.5 (-3 inches)
thighs (halfway between knee and crotch)-21.5 (same)
calf (widest part)- 14.5 (same)
total inches lost 11.25 (counting arms and thighs twice)
Hmmmm. So in one week of getting back on track, I can lose almost three pounds and several inches all over my body???
That seems like a lot, but I measured correctly. And you can see the difference in these progress pictures, the first one take a week ago.
My guess: Water weight and bloat. I think that I was carrying a lot of water weight around, and now it's gone. And that makes me happy! The scale says I'm lighter and so do my jeans. :-)
I'm sure that the results this week will be less dramatic (though I would love to lose an inch or two of hips before this is all over!) and that is fine with me. I have 10 pounds left to lose and 9 weeks to get there.
I CAN DO THIS!!!

May Measurements
Here is my second set of measurements. The first measurements post can be found here. It was on April 11, and I said that I would do monthly measurements updates... oops! But better late than never!
I could not find my little red shorts, but I found another tiny pair of shorts for the comparison photo. I must say that I don't see much of a difference, but here they are, side by side, April 11 me vs. May 21 me.
My new meaurements (+/- in inches)
neck - 12.5 (0)
upper arm - 11 (0)
forearm- 8.5 (-.5)
bust (widest part)- 37 (0)
waist (smallest part) - 30 (0)
waist (largest part, belly button) - 36 (-1)
hips (largest part, butt) - 42.5 (0)
thigh (largest part)- 22 (-1)
calf (largest part) -15 (0)
total difference: -2.5 inches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is exciting to me, since INCHES lost is what I'm going for. Inches lost will get me into my goal jeans, even if pounds lost haven't. I'm so excited that my hard work has paid off.
If you aren't already taking measurements regularly, I highly recommend it. It has been highly motivating. I will try to go 4 or 5 weeks and then measure again.

Measurements!!!
I've decided to start focusing on the measuring tape and in how clothes fit more than I focus on the scale.
I took my measurements on March 5 (around the time that I started switching up my workouts and adding in The Wave on a regular basis), and then again on April 9. I am pretty pleased with the results so far! I also decided to take monthly progress pictures to post on here.
In these pictures, I'll be wearing a sports bra and a size medium running shorts. These shorts are currently too small, so please don't be too mean about the muffin top! I know it's there. I just thought that this would be a great way to watch as I slowly begin to fit into these shorts again. :-) So in about a month, I'll be taking another photo and comparing it to this one. Here are my measurements results (in inches):
March 5, 2011
neck- 12.5
upper arm (left)- 12
lower arm (left)- 9
bust (widest part)- 37.5
waist (smallest part)- 30
waist (largest part)- 37
hips (largest part/butt)- 43
thigh (largest part/right)- 24
calf (largest part/left)- 14
April 9, 2011
neck- 12.5 (I think that I may leave this one out from now on, I don't see my neck getting smaller!)
upper arm (left)- 11 (down 1 inch!!!)
lower arm- 9 (same story as neck....)
bust (widest part)- 37 (down half inch!!!)
waist (smallest part)- 30
waist (largest part)- 37
hips (largest part/butt)- 42.5 (down half inch!!!)
thigh (largest part/right)- 23 (down one inch!!!)
calf (largest part/left)- 15 (up one inch! But I think it's muscle, so I'm happy with it!)
Total lost: 2 inches!!! Woo-hoo!!!
These are the end result of my first vegan cupcake baking! These are the "Cookies and Cream" cupcakes from "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World".
I had to leave you with a fun picture! This is something awesome that I discovered about my haircut! After a sweaty workout, the grease in my hair can make my hair form a mohawk!

The Firm Wave, measurements, and a possible modified WW plan for me...
I've decided to finally start taking measurements of my body! I did this at the beginning of my WLJ, and I would love to see how far I've come since then! Unfortunately, I can't remember where I put them, but as soon as I find my original measurements, I will share my results with you. For now, I've decided to "put up or shut up" when it comes to my goal jeans.Yes, I have raised my goal weight, but I still dream of fitting into those size 10's. Here's a lovely picture of my "goal jeans". They are American Eagle size 10 (and yes I know that is a teeny-bopper store!)

They actually currently go up past my thighs and hips, but are about 4 or 5 inches short of being able to zip up. :-) So, I'm making it a new goal of mine to focus on losing inches, not just pounds!
One way to up my inches lost is to change up my workouts, which is something that I discussed on here recently. I've decided that I really need to add more strength training to my workouts to start seeing maximum results.
And since I get bored with strength easily, I've decided to trick myself by using fun workout DVDs that combine cardio with strength. I dug out my Firm Wave and the DVDs that came with it.

Wow, I forgot what a great workout this is! I did the 40 minutes DVD last night, and this morning I'm feeling the burn in exactly the places that I want to firm up!!! (hips, upper thighs, lower stomach) so I know that adding this workout into my routine will help. Plus, it's 40 minutes long, the exact amount of time that I have to exercise before work. How perfect is that?!
Anyway, I am down .8 for my second week on the Simply Filling Technique. YAY!!!
I have decided to definately follow WW as written until I reach 145, and then to slowly start modifying it to fit my needs and wants.
Here are my thoughts on the "Leah's Modified WW Plan" so far:
- -Stay on the Simply Filling Technique
- -except add the following foods to the Power Foods list: nuts, natural nut butters, avacados, healthy no-sugar-added cold cereals, almond milk
- -Reduce Weekly Points Allowance to 10-15 to make up for my Power Foods additions...
- -Eat all AP if I want/need to
What do you think?
I think that those modifications could keep me ridiculously happy and able to stay on WW (even if not the "real" plan). I'll let you know how it goes, but it's not going to start until I'm maintaining for a bit.
